Uglies by Scott Westerfeld Book Review

Uglies is an amazing book, great for anyone who loves sci fi and conspiracy.

The book is about a future world, where once you turn 16 you have an operation that makes you pretty: essentially its just heavy plastic surgery.

After the operation you go to the other side of town, where all you have to worry about is partying, having fun, and looking beautiful. But then one girl decides she doesn't want to be pretty, so she runs away.

As she is pursued, she slowly learns the truth about what it really means to be "Pretty", and realizes what really happened to the other runaways who decided they didn't want to be pretty.

The book is written well, and despite taking place in the future it provides a great social commentary for the world we live in today. Itis a must read for anybody who is a fan of sci fi and action adventure.

Note from Megan, Editor of the Book Club Guide: Thanks for taking the time to submit your review, Angela.

For book clubs, this book would raise some interesting questions about the pressures we feel to meet societal standards. It would also be a good choice for sci fi book clubs with its strong science fiction element.
